Sleep Apnea Awareness Month

With the declaration of Sleep Apnea Awareness Month inMaine we thought we should share excerpts from a recent article concerning your health.

Nov. 10 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine

"Those patients with obstructive sleep apnea had about a twofold increased risk of stroke or dying compared to those without sleep apnea," Yaggi tells WebMD. "Those with more severe obstructive sleep apnea had threefold risk of stroke or death from any cause -- and that was after adjusting for other stroke risk factors."

There's no argument that sleep apnea treatment can get quick results in treating many of the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. Treatment not only helps snoring and daytime drowsiness, but it also reduces the high blood pressure caused by sleep apnea, says David M. Rapoport, MD, director of the sleep medicine program at New York University.

"Maybe it takes a long time to accumulate the effects of treatment, and even though patients get better they may not eliminate the stroke risk right away," Rapoport tells WebMD. "There is a cumulative effect of sleep apnea. It is like smoking. If you smoke for 20 years and then stop, you are at higher risk of lung cancer for a while."

If you suffer from sleep apnea be sure to use your machine every night.  As technology continues to bring new products to market, this technology also provides better testing methods.  From these testing procedures the evidence is clear; non-compliance to CPAP therapy will cause major problems in you over-all health! If you know someone who suffers from symptoms but has not seen their doctor, please prompt them - you can save their live.

Please keep in mind as Spring begins to bloom across the nation, there will be an increase in pollen and other irritants.  Remember to change your filters more often to reduce contaminants in your CPAP circuit.

As always we hope that you find this information helpful and informative.  We thank you for choosing CPAP Supplies Plus/Direct as your supplier for CPAP equipment and accessories.  Don't forget to maintain good health by keeping your equipment clean and replacing your filters and tubing often! Remember, poor performance of your mask may mean a new cushion or nasal pillows are needed.
