More Evidence for OSA-Heart Disease Link
Add a study from Greece to the mountain of evidence linking CPAP therapy to better heart function. The latest study, published online by CHEST, the journal of the American College of Chest Physicians, concludes that CPAP therapy for OSA patients creates measurable positive effects on serum cardiovascular risk factors. The study by Greek physicians examined the blood of 53 newly diagnosed OSA patients who had not yet begun CPAP therapy.

The patients (47 male, 6 female) were nonsmokers who did not have other diseases and did not take medications for other conditions. The researchers found that the serum levels of cardiovascular risk factors (hs-CRP, homocysteine, total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-C, LDL-C, apolipoprotein A-I, and apolipoprotein B) were elevated in the patients before CPAP therapy began. Once the patients started CPAP therapy, they were grouped by their compliance in wearing the CPAP device at night. Group 1 had good compliance—wearing the CPAP device more than 4 hours per night. Group 2 had poor compliance and wore the device less than 4 hours per night. Group 3 refused therapy completely.

After 6 months, the researchers again looked at the patients’ blood. They found that in group 1 (those with good compliance), the serum levels of cardiovascular risk factors showed a significant decrease in hs-CRP (P=0.03), homocysteine (P=0.005), total cholesterol (P=0.021), total cholesterol/HDL-C ratio (P=0.018), and apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein A-I ratio (P=0.021). Group 2 (those with poor compliance) only had a decrease in homocysteine levels (P=0.021), while in group 3 (the patients that refused therapy), there was no significant change in the serum levels of cardiovascular risk factors.

The Greek researchers concluded that CPAP therapy may therefore reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems. More good news for those who sell CPAP units, and an added reason to get increased numbers diagnosed and treated for SDB.
