Obstructive Sleep Apnea affects not only the old but the young. Research continues to be done on children who have OSA and reports are published periodically. We have included a few in this issue that we hope you will find interesting or can possibly pass on to someone with a child who has Obstructive Sleep Apnea or the symptoms of this health condition.

Researchers to children: Wear your CPAP masks
BALTIMORE - Children with sleep apnea don't always use CPAP masks consistently enough to improve their breathing and oxygen levels, according to a new study.  The findings of the study, which involved 29 children over six months, were published in the March issue of Pediatrics.

Researchers reported that 78% of parents told them their children did not use masks every night. They also reported that even the children who used masks every night only did so for an average of five hours.  When masks are used correctly, researchers found a nine-fold average decrease in the apnea hypopnea index (AHI), which represents the number of interruptions in breathing per hour.  Researchers did not address the reasons for non-compliance, saying further studies are needed.

The Johns Hopkins Children's Center and two other pediatric hospitals conducted the study, which was partially funded by ResMed, the manufacturer of the device used in the study.

Nasal CPAP Helps Infants
Nasal CPAP can increase functional residual capacity in premature infants, improve their minute ventilation, improve oxygenation, prevent early terminal airway closure, decrease critical opening pressure of collapsed alveoli, redistribute lung fluid, maintain the integrity of surfactant and decrease the work of breathing, according to Brian Walsh of the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA. To help accomplish that goal, the university medical center is switching its newborns to non-invasive positive pressure ventilation as quickly as possible.  But it is not for every infant. Intubation is still indicated when the patient is not breathing or has hypoxia, according to experts.
