What are BiPAP Machines?

Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP or BiLevel) machines are another type of machine used to non-invasively treat Sleep Apnea (both obstructive and central). These machines blow two different pressures of air: one pressure for inhalation and a lower pressure for exhalation. This makes it easier for the user to exhale. BiPAP or BiLevel machines are used especially for people with Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) because the inhale-exhale pressure pattern helps the patient to breathe when the brain fails to tell the body to do so. The pressures emitted by the machine are unique to each user and are determined in a sleep lab and prescribed by a doctor. Both pressures are assigned so that they are enough to keep a person’s airway open at all times, which prevents apneas (pauses in breathing due to a collapsed airway) and hypopneas (shallow breaths due to a partially closed airway) and provides a full night of uninterrupted rest. People often feel less fatigued and irritable, and more alert during the day once they start using a BiPAP or BiLevel machine. Every machine comes with a power cord, filter, and hose (tubing), and can be enhanced with additional elements such as humidifiers and insulated hose coverings. They are small enough to fit on a bedside table and some are convenient for traveling.
