What are CPAP Machines?

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure or CPAP machines are the most effective treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and are non-invasive. The CPAP machine delivers a constant flow of pressurized air through a tube and out of a mask to keep a person’s airway open. This prevents apneas (pauses in breathing due to a collapsed airway) and hypopneas (shallow breaths due to a partially closed airway) from occurring, allowing the user to experience a full night of deep, uninterrupted sleep. The pressure of air the machine delivers is unique to each user and is prescribed by a doctor. Using a CPAP machine may take some getting used to, but once accustomed to it, people often feel better rested, more motivated, and happier throughout the day. Every machine comes with a power cord, filter, and hose (tubing), and can be enhanced with additional elements such as humidifiers and insulated hose coverings. They are small enough to fit on a bedside table and some are convenient for traveling.
